About Me: From Rock Bottom to a Six-Figure Civil Service Career
My path to a stable, lucrative career was anything but traditional. I am a military veteran, a former business owner whose venture failed, and an automotive industry professional who survived multiple dealership closures. At my lowest point, I was so financially strained that I had to borrow money from loved ones just to cover rent while surviving on a low-paying aviation job that brought in just low five-digits a year.
Everything changed when I took a chance on a public service application. Looking back, this is a deeply fulfilling and incredibly rewarding career. It offers absolute stability and peace of mind, completely safe from the constant threat of firings and corporate layoffs that plague the private sector. My only real regret is that I did not apply much sooner. Like so many others, I simply did not know how the system worked. Had I understood the process back then, I would have targeted a higher-paying track from the start instead of easing in through an entry-level position.
My Journey Through the Ranks
The Foot in the Door: I entered public service by taking an Education and Experience Exam (EEE), landing a modest entry-level technical position just to get my foot in the door — a slow route I now teach others how to shorten.
The Permanent Milestone: I secured permanent civil service status and earned a promotion within my first two years, with a substantial salary bump attached to it.
The Leadership Leap: By preparing for and conquering a promotional interview, I climbed into a supervisory operations role.
The Strategic Pivot: I identified a high-earning, specialized utility track in a completely different agency field, studied the specific requirements, applied, and transitioned into a much higher income bracket.
The High-Demand Present: I advanced into a highly competitive, specialized position against a deep pool of qualified applicants. Today, I've reached a high six-figure career, completely transforming my financial baseline.
My Success Formula: The 20% Breakdown
I am not smarter than anyone else. I didn't achieve this level of success because of a high IQ or a privileged background. My journey from the brink of financial ruin to a high six-figure career is built on a very specific formula, where five elements came together in alignment:
20% Studying: I spent countless hours deeply analyzing Notices of Examination, mastering DCAS exam structures, and learning exactly how civil service tests are built.
20% Dedication: I refused to give up after layoffs, a failed business, and exam failures, putting consistent, focused effort into navigating the bureaucratic maze.
20% Faith: I relied heavily on my faith to guide my steps, provide peace of mind during tough transitions, and open doors that seemed closed.
20% Experience: I learned how to strategically leverage my military background, private-sector automotive work, and technical skills to meet rigid civil service qualification rubrics.
20% Timing: I applied right as the system modernized, positioning myself to take advantage of specialized titles and high-paying promotional tracks as they opened up.
Fortunately, the barrier to entry has changed for the better. Now that the DCAS application and testing system has moved from old paper formats to a digital platform (OASys), navigating the process is easier than it has ever been.
Fast-Tracking Your Success: Skip Rungs, Not Requirements
Many people assume you have to spend decades slowly climbing from the bottom rung to reach a high-income public job. That's not entirely true — but it's not a free pass either.
If you know exactly what a title's Notice of Examination is looking for, you can leverage your existing private-sector experience, education, or military background to qualify directly for a higher-paying specialized exam, rather than starting at entry level out of habit. DCAS weighs documented experience, certifications, and specialized training the same way it weighs time-in-title — so if your background already matches a senior rubric, there's no rule saying you have to start lower than you qualify for. The catch, and it's a real one: your resume has to mirror that rubric's exact language, or a strong background can still get disqualified on a technicality before anyone looks at your experience. Skipping rungs works when you match the requirements precisely — not as a way around not meeting them.
